It's worth noting that there are British Standards to consider when choosing between the different tile spacer sizes. In short, it's recommended that wall tile spacers are 2 to 3 mm and floor tile spacers are 3 to 5 mm.
The size of spacer you need depends on whether you're tiling a wall or floor, on the size of tile you're using and on the aesthetic appearance you want to achieve. There are no hard and fast rules regarding spacer sizes although, as a general rule, 2 mm are suitable for walls and 4 mm for floors. 4 mm can, however, be used on walls

Spacer Size = (Tile Size - Desired Spacing) / 2. Where: Spacer Size is the size of the tile spacer you need. Tile Size is the dimension of the tile (length or width, depending on the orientation). Desired Spacing is the gap you want between tiles.
